In this guide
“How much does a website cost?” is the first question almost every business owner asks, and the most common answer, “it depends”, is not very useful. It does depend, but on a short list of things you can understand before you talk to anyone. This guide gives you realistic price ranges for each type of website, explains what drives the cost up or down, and lists the running costs that many quotes leave out.
Quick answer: in the US, a professionally built small business website typically costs $1,500–$6,000 using a customised theme, $5,000–$20,000 with a fully custom design, and $5,000–$30,000+ for an online store. Budget roughly $300–$3,000 a year to run and maintain it.
Website cost by type
These are typical market ranges for work done by a professional freelancer or agency. Your quote will depend on the details covered further down.
| Type of website | Typical one-off cost (USD) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| DIY website builder (Wix, Squarespace and similar) | $0 to set up, then a monthly plan | Very early-stage businesses, personal sites, testing an idea |
| Template or theme-based site, 5–10 pages | $1,500 – $6,000 | Local businesses and service companies that need a professional presence quickly |
| Custom-designed business website, 10–30 pages | $5,000 – $20,000 | Established businesses that compete online and want a unique brand and stronger conversions |
| E-commerce store | $5,000 – $30,000+ | Selling products online, from a small catalogue to thousands of products |
| Web portal or web application | $25,000 and up | Customer or vendor logins, dashboards, bookings, integrations, SaaS products |
What actually drives the price
Two websites with the same number of pages can differ in price by several times. These are the factors that make the difference.
1. Custom design or a customised theme
A theme gives you a proven layout that is adjusted to your brand. A custom design starts from your audience and goals, with wireframes and visual designs for each key page. Custom design costs more but usually converts better and sets you apart from competitors using the same theme.
2. Number of unique page templates
What matters is less the total number of pages than how many different layouts are needed. Twenty service pages that share one template cost far less than ten pages that each need their own design.
3. Functionality
Every feature beyond text and images adds design, development and testing time. Common examples include online booking, quote calculators, member areas, multi-language content, search and filtering, payment processing and integrations with a CRM, ERP or email platform.
4. Content
Writing, photography and video are often underestimated. If you supply finished copy and images, the project is faster and cheaper. If you need SEO-friendly copywriting or a photo shoot, budget for it from the start.
5. Platform
WordPress, Shopify and other established platforms reduce cost because so much already exists. A fully custom-coded build costs more upfront but gives you complete control. We compare the options in WordPress vs a custom website.
6. SEO, speed and accessibility
A site that is built properly for search engines, loads fast on mobile and meets accessibility basics takes more care than one that only looks right on a designer’s screen. It is worth paying for, because fixing these problems later costs more.
The ongoing costs most quotes leave out
A website is not a one-off purchase. Plan for these running costs every year:
| Item | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name | $10 – $25 / year | More for premium or some country domains |
| Hosting | $5 – $100+ / month | Shared hosting is cheapest; busy sites and stores need more power |
| SSL certificate | Often free | Included with most good hosts |
| Premium plugins, apps or licences | $0 – $500+ / year | Forms, SEO tools, backups, store apps |
| Maintenance and support | $50 – $500+ / month | Updates, security monitoring, backups, small changes |
| Marketing (SEO, ads, content) | Varies | What actually brings visitors to the site |
Freelancer, agency or DIY?
- DIY builders are cheapest upfront, but you pay with your own time, and you can run into limits on design, SEO and features as you grow.
- Freelancers can be excellent value for smaller projects. Check that they cover design, development, SEO basics and support, or that you know who will.
- Agencies cost more per hour but bring a team: strategy, design, development, content, SEO and project management, plus continuity if someone is unavailable.
How to get an accurate quote
You will get faster, more accurate and more comparable quotes if you prepare a one-page brief that covers:
- What the website must achieve (calls, enquiries, sales, bookings).
- Your audience and two or three competitor or “inspiration” sites.
- The pages you expect and any special features.
- Who will provide the content and images.
- Your deadline and a realistic budget range.
Ask every provider for an itemised quote that separates design, development, content, and ongoing costs, and ask what is included after launch.
Red flags when comparing quotes
- A price with no breakdown, or no written scope.
- No mention of mobile responsiveness, speed or basic SEO.
- You will not own your domain, content or website files.
- No plan for backups, security updates or support after launch.
- Guaranteed “#1 on Google” promises.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a professional website for under $1,000?
It is possible with a simple theme-based site from a freelancer or a DIY builder, but expect limits on design, features and support. For a business that depends on online enquiries, a budget of $1,500 or more is more realistic.
How long does it take to build a website?
A typical theme-based business site takes 2–6 weeks. Custom-designed sites usually take 6–12 weeks, and online stores or portals can take longer depending on features and content.
Why do website quotes vary so much?
Quotes differ because providers include different things: custom design versus a theme, content writing, SEO setup, integrations and post-launch support. Comparing itemised quotes is the only fair way to compare.
Do I have to pay for my website every month?
You will have some running costs, such as hosting, your domain name and maintenance. Some providers bundle these into a monthly fee; others charge them separately.
Is WordPress cheaper than a custom website?
Usually yes for brochure sites and blogs, because themes and plugins already exist. A custom build costs more upfront but can make sense for unusual functionality or high-traffic applications.
