AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear above the normal results for many questions in Google Search, with links to the websites they draw on. AI Mode goes further, letting people ask follow-up questions in a conversation. For businesses, being one of those linked sources is valuable visibility. Here is what Google says and what you can do.
Quick answer: there is no special switch or markup for AI Overviews. Your page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Beyond that, the pages most likely to be used are helpful, clearly structured, specific and from a trustworthy site.
What Google officially says
Google’s documentation for site owners states that the usual SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, that there are no additional technical requirements, and that you do not need new machine-readable files or special schema to appear. Both features may use a “query fan-out” technique, running several related searches on subtopics, which means pages that answer specific sub-questions well can be included.
The technical checklist
- Indexed: check the page with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console.
- Snippet allowed: no
nosnippet, restrictivemax-snippetornoindexon pages you want cited. - Crawlable: robots.txt, your CDN and firewall must allow Googlebot.
- Content in text: important information should be in HTML text, not only in images or behind interactions.
- Internal links: link to key pages from your menu and related articles so they are easy to discover.
- Structured data that matches the page: helpful for understanding, but never different from what visitors see.
Content that is easy to cite
- Lead with the answer. Under each question-style heading, answer in one or two plain sentences, then expand.
- Cover the sub-questions. For “website cost”, also cover hosting, maintenance, timelines and what affects price. Fan-out searches look for exactly these.
- Use lists and tables for steps, comparisons and price ranges.
- Show experience. Real processes, examples and named authors make content more trustworthy than generic text.
- Keep it current. Update prices, dates and screenshots, and show the updated date.
Measuring AI Overview traffic
Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. Watch impressions and clicks for question-style queries, and track conversions in your analytics, because Google notes that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality.
Common mistakes
- Blocking Googlebot or snippets by accident while trying to block AI training crawlers. Google-Extended controls use in some other Google AI systems, not inclusion in Search.
- Thin pages that restate the question without answering it.
- Expecting AI Overviews on every query. Google shows them only when it judges they add value.

Frequently asked questions
Can I opt in to Google AI Overviews?
No. There is no opt-in. Pages are eligible if they are indexed and can show a snippet in Google Search; Google decides when to show an AI Overview and which sources to link.
Does schema markup get me into AI Overviews?
No specific schema is required. Structured data helps Google understand your content and can enable rich results, but it must match the visible page and is not a guarantee of inclusion.
How do I know if my site appears in AI Overviews?
Search Console includes AI Overview and AI Mode clicks and impressions in the Performance report. You can also search the questions your customers ask and look for your site among the linked sources.
Can I stop my content appearing in AI Overviews?
You can limit what Google shows with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex, but these also affect normal search snippets or visibility.
Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?
They can reduce clicks for simple questions, but the clicks that remain often come from more engaged visitors. Being a cited source keeps your brand visible at the top of the page.
